Emerging Contaminants in Streams of Doce River Watershed, Minas Gerais, Brazil

This study investigated the occurrence and risk assessment of ten pharmaceutical products two herbicides in water rivers from Doce river watershed (Brazil). Of 12 chemicals studied, (acyclovir, amoxicillin, azithromycin, ciprofloxacin, enrofloxacin, fluoxetine, erythromycin, sulfadiazine, sulfamethoxazole, glyphosate aminomethylphosphonic acid) had a 100% detection rate. In general, total concentrations all target drugs ranged 4.6 to 14.5 ?g L ?1 , with fluoroquinolones sulfonamides being most representative classes products. Herbicides were found at least times higher than those individual represented major class contaminants samples. Most studied above that pose an ecotoxicological aquatic biota. Urban wastewater must be main source waterbodies. Our results show that, addition metal (currently conducted after Fundão dam breach), there is urgent need monitor emerging contaminant waters rivers, as some environmental risks life humans due use surface for drinking domestic purposes by local population. Special attention should given glyphosate, aminomethylphosaphonic acid, ciprofloxacin enrofloxacin (whose are predicted levels induce resistance selection).
